A series of free workshops for writers who have just started or are planning to write a full-length fiction novel.
The Basics is a course designed for early-stage writers looking to make their first steps to write a novel. Spread over five weeks, the course will be run by four award-winning debut novelists and an experienced editor. Each session will standalone so you don’t need to sign up to each one to take part. They will also be recorded so you can catch up.
In the first session, Pam Williams, author of A Trace of Sun, will cover the basics of developing detailed and believable characters. She will discuss how she created the characters in her novel and work through a series of exercises to elevate your characters from the concept stage.

A Grenadian heritage writer born in London, Pam Williams’ debut novel A Trace of Sun (Legend Press, March 2024) was longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction.
Pam is a former fashion journalist, magazine Fashion Editor (She, PS, Shape, Now) and freelance stylist who is now a teacher at a special school. She has always indulged in creative writing and in 2017 her short story Soul Talking was highly commended and published in the City of Stories (Spread the Word) anthology.
Further writing credits include contributing to the Afrikan Heritage Writers poetry and prose collection, 100 Years Unheard - WWI and the Afrikan Diasporan Woman (2018) and winning the Black Ink Magazine New Writing 2022 Prize with her short story, Hibiscus.
An alumnus of the London Writers Award (2019), Pam secured her place with an excerpt from a novel she’d started (and put aside many times) thirty years before. During the programme she transformed it into the first draft of A Trace of Sun and was then offered representation by Northbank Talent Management.
Pam has since completed her second novel and is in negotiations for publication.
