We often overlook time in fiction because a story has to propel forward. However, some of the most memorable pages we read wield narrative time in deft, unexpected ways. Part of the Developing Tutor workshop series.
Even though a story has to move forward, time within a story is not beholden to such rules. In fiction, time can move sideways, backwards or even spin out. In this workshop, we will look closely at how to manipulate time in fiction. We will work to understand how time can unfold in structure and style, and ways to expand, contract and play with time in our own fiction writing practices.
What will you do in the workshop?
There will be readings, discussions and exercises. Participants are requested to bring a page-long section from a (finished or unfinished) draft of a story or chapter. You will develop a usable vocabulary for how time can operate in fiction.
What can you expect?
Using handouts of slides, short-burst editing exercises, and example texts from writers such as Mavis Gallant, Jesmyn Ward and others, you will learn craft strategies to shape and explore time in your own work.
Who is this workshop for?
This workshop is open to all writers of fiction, including beginners—the only thing needed is a page-long draft.
